Is smoking a difficult habit?

Published on June 3rd, 2008 01:36

According to many researches the worst habit is smoking, because smoking is a habit which individuals find difficult to quit. Many people make preparations for months in their effort to get rid of the habit, making painstaking plans to eliminate their dependence on nicotine.

Scientists showed that in Mintel, two-thirds of regular smokers have tried to quit and failed. Furthermore 40% of these smokers have tried to quit more than four times but failed every time.

Billy Hulkower, the Senior Analyst at Mintel, remarked: "Everyone knows quitting smoking is difficult, but many people don't realize how hard it actually is. The majority of current smokers have tried to quit but they haven't been successful. It's a difficult battle and people have mixed views on the best methods and products to help them quit."

According to a research, 74% of adults successfully quit smoking because they just break the habit. Another group of 8% of smokers kicks the habit only after using nicotine replacement products such as the patch or gum. Only six percent of smokers successfully quit by slowing cutting back on cigarettes, and just four percent quit with the help of an oral prescription medication.

After this research, scientists observed that however making an effort to give up the habit of smoking all on a sudden is far more likely to yield satisfactory results. Spontaneous efforts to end the habit of smoking have a greater rate of success in comparison to planned attempts made by individuals to give up the habit. This can be attributed to the fact that prior planning gives rise to tension, making it difficult for smokers to kick the habit.

Hulkower explained: "Our research points to cold turkey as the most successful way to quit smoking, but cold turkey is also smokers' most commonly attempted method for quitting."

In a study was showed that 28% Americans smokes cigarettes, despite health warnings, rising cigarette prices and local anti-smoking laws. Cigarettes and tobacco products accounted for over $103 billion in sales last year, while smoking cessation products only pulled in $536 million.

Giving up the habit of smoking is one of the most crucial things that an individual can probably do. Quitting smoking ensures a longer and better life.

In order to quit smoking individuals should prepare themselves for this move.
